Surprise bitch!  The upcoming eighth season of ‘American Horror Story’, which arrives this fall, will be the long in-discussion crossover between the first installment, ‘Murder House’ and the third, ‘Coven’!  Series creator Ryan Murphy first teased plans to merge these two incarnations back in 2016, but since then, he has been busy with other ideas.  His most recent season, ‘Cult’ aired last fall and was the first time the show didn’t touch on any supernatural elements.  Instead, the focus was on cults, politics, and fanaticism.  The seasons prior, ‘Hotel’ and ‘Roanoke’ actually wove elements and characters from various seasons together, solidifying that every installment of ‘AHS’ took place in the same reality.  (If you’re interested, I wrote a pretty lengthy timeline of this after the first episode of ‘Roanoke’, which you can read here.)  (There had been smaller allusions and crossovers before these, of course.)

The announcement that this year’s season would be the crossover came straight from Murphy himself:

Just months ago, Murphy went on the record to say that the crossover would not happen this year but the next:

“We’re working on it, but that’s not going to be [Season 8].  That will probably be the one after that. We’ve already met about it and outlined it. But it won’t be next because some of the [cast members] are not available.”

Murphy has been teasing Season Eight as taking place 18 months into the future and has been using the subtitle ‘Radioactive’.  These things may still hold true, of course, but it’s also possible that he didn’t think he’d be able to do the crossover this year and had moved ahead with plans for a different tale.  We’ll have to wait on clarification on that matter.  He did, however, state that the eighth season would be like “The Love Boat” with scores of returning cast members, so maybe he already knew at that point what was truly in the works.

What had been reported before now is that Kathy Bates and Evan Peters would be the focal characters this year.  Peters was reported to be playing a flamboyant hairdresser with new addition Joan Collins as his grandmother.  Like Peters, Sarah Paulson has been a series regular since ‘Murder House’ and her character was said to be wearing “dental appliances.”  Cheyenne Jackson and Adina Porter who have appeared in multiple season were also coming back, along with Billy Eichner, Leslie Grossman, and Billie Lourd, who made their ‘AHS’ debuts in ‘Cult’.

If the crossover does take place in the future, that means that several characters most likely won’t appear as they have been killed off.  At the end of ‘Murder House,’ nearly everyone in the story was dead and stuck haunting the titular abode.  Since then, a few additional characters have been killed off, like Gabourey Sidibe’s Queenie and Christine Eastabrook’s realtor Marcy.  We’ll have to wait and see which fan favorites will actually appear in the flesh.

Are you excited that ‘American Horror Story’ season eight will finally bring ‘Murder House’ and ‘Coven’ (and possibly other seasons) together?
