This weekend is HUGE for Sam Raimi. Not only is his new movie from Disney, ‘Oz The Great And Powerful’ hitting theaters, but also the reboot for ‘Evil Dead’ is premiering at South By Southwest, which starts on Friday in Austin, Texas. With so much going on for the director right now, it’s no surprise that he’s out promoting things. And as they tend to do, fans bring up the past and the most beloved works, so the conversation at a recent London press conference drifted towards another ‘Evil Dead’ featuring Bruce Campbell’s Ash.

According to Bleeding Cool, the director said that he’d be into making a fourth in the series. Disney’s official Twitter even quoted him saying, “I would love to make ‘Evil Dead 4’. My brother and I plan to work on the script this summer.” Sure, it sounds a little weird that he’d announce this considering the new film is by Fede Alvarez and is preparing for a wide release in April. But a few months back, Raimi stopped another company from making a movie called ‘Evil Dead 4’ because he still had interest in the property. Is it actually possible that we’re going to be seeing the boomstick-wielding cult hero on the big screen once again?

Well, ‘Evil Dead’ fans, don’t hold your breath. In an interview with The Playlist, Raimi did some cleanup and clarified his comments from the press conference:

“Those guys made me say that. I am thinking about it but a crowd goes ‘Come on Sam, do it!”’ so I said ‘Okay, I guess I was talking to my brother about it’ But I feel like I was pushed into saying that, a little bit. In the hallway today I joked with Ivan ‘Get working on that script!’ but I really don’t know. I’m afraid that every time I talk about it people get really mad at me when I don’t follow through with it. I would like to work on the script over the summer that much is true. But the reason to come back and do it again is only that they’re making me, those fans. I was saying to Ivan ‘Why do they stay on this thing? Why do they keep at it?’ and he said ‘They want to make a movie. You’re a filmmaker and your fans are asking you to make the movie. What are you, an idiot? Make the movie!’ I guess there’s something I don’t see. It makes sense when Ivan says it… but I didn’t have a tremendous amount of passion until right now to bring to it. I love working with Bruce Campbell and Rob Tapert, I have so much fun making those movies, so… but the fans are really forcing me into it.”

While I’m sure that Raimi still has a special place in his heart for ‘Evil Dead’, he’ll probably continue to only be involved in a producing capacity on the new version of the franchise if this first one is successful. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, folks!
