Looks like Emily Blunt is heading back to the sci-fi genre for her next project as Variety is reporting that she is in negotiations to star with Tom Cruise in the flick ‘All You Need Is Kill.’

The movie has been described as ‘Groundhog Day’ with a twist. Cruise plays a raw alien fighting recruit who gets killed in action but then finds himself alive the next day to relive the final day of his life over and over again. In the process, he finds that maybe becoming a better soldier may finally change his fate and break the cycle he seems to be caught up in.

Blunt would play Valkyrie One, one of human kind’s best soldiers who fights alongside Cruise’s character.

Blunt seems to be on a trend of starring in sci-fi films. Last year she came onto the sci-fi scene while playing the role of Elise Sellas alongside Matt Damon in ‘The Adjustment Bureau.’ This year she will be starring with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis in ‘Looper.’ She was even offered the role of Black Widow in ‘Iron Man 2‘ but Fox wouldn’t let her out of her contract and she had to film ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ instead. Blunt also had a chance to play Peggy Carter in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ but passed on the role. ‘All You Need Is Kill’ is slated to be released sometime in 2013.

The film is based on the manga of the same name by Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s. The screenplay was written by Dante Harper (‘Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters’) and made it on the 2010 Black List (a list that is made by film makers where they list the best unproduced screenplays of that year. Before ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ started production, its screenplay was also on that list.) Joby Harold will be doing some rewrites and will also serve as executive producer with Doug Liman (‘Jumper’, ‘Knight Rider’ reboot) directing.

Blunt has shown a lot of diversity in the roles she has chosen to play and will make a great addition to this movie. I only wish the film makers would finally decide what the official name of the film would be.

‘All You Need is Kill’ aka ‘We Mortals Are’ is scheduled to start production sometime later this year.
