Captain Planet

Since everything from the 80s and 90s is being redone, it’s time for a live-action ‘Captain Planet‘ movie and writer Glen Powell is sharing that the movie will be “dark and irreverent.” He is currently penning the script with Jono Matt who will adapt the eco-friendly 90s cartoon shows ‘Captain Planet and the Planeteers’ and ‘The New Adventures of Captain Planet.’ Barbara Pyle and Ted Turner created the series in the 90s to try and put the ecological problems in our world in front of younger audiences both as entertainment and likely to have some hope that it could help grow more environmentally conscious children.

When bringing the film to life, Powell shares that they won’t be going fully with the original tone:

“I mean they’ve tried to make it into a superhero movie before, but they kind of did like an earnest take and ours is way more subversive and fun and like dark and irreverent. Sometimes you have to think of these things logically. If you have a blue superhero with a green mullet, you can’t do like an earnest take on that. You have to go at it from a fun [direction].”

I have to agree with Powell on this one. Trying to deliver a live-action ‘Captain Planet’ movie in this day and age seems to be a stretch. Hopefully, they don’t go with the grim feeling of the first set of DC movies. He did share that it was also moving forward and that “we’re getting that up and going and we’re really stoked about it.” While it sounds like there is progress being made on the writing, there still isn’t a director or cast attached to the film so I wouldn’t hold your breath on any significant news in the near future.

Are you looking forward to seeing a new take on ‘Captain Planet’? Do you think they can pull off a live-action movie with today’s modern superhero movies? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
