After ‘Deadpool’ proved to be a surprise monster hit at the box office, eyes are now now looking forward to May’s ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ which further expands Fox’s X-Men film universe.  After that, the studio plans to delve even further into comic lore with ‘New Mutants’, based on the long-running spinoff featuring teens being trained to be the next generation of mutant heroes.

Since the ‘New Mutants’ are technically part of the X-Men Universe, many of its members have already appeared in films, including Adan Canto as Sunspot (above), Booboo Stewart as Warpath and Bingbing Fan as Blink.  But there are many more characters that have served with that team, as producer Simon Kinberg expressed:

“Traditionally, the New Mutants have some characters that cross over from the mainline ‘X-Men’ movies. As we are going, I would say it’s likely that you will see some familiar faces.  There’s a very deep bench.  There’s a long, long list of names, and I’ll tell you some of the names on that list I don’t even know. That’s how deep it goes.”

Deadpool actually debuted as a villain in the ‘New Mutants’ comic book shortly before it was rebranded as ‘X-Force’— which is another film that could be in the works at Fox.

Just as ‘Deadpool’ had a completely different feel than the existing ‘X-Men’ movies, expect upcoming films to also embrace unique tones:

“Josh Boone and his writing partner are working on the script. They’re doing a really nice job of it, and it’s a really cool one, because in many ways, like Deadpool was so different from the mainline X-Men movies, New Mutants… It’s maybe not as different as Deadpool, but it has its own unique, original voice to it.

“That’s the fun for me, working in the X-Men universe, creating these sort of standalone movies that have a different vibe to them. And ‘New Mutants’ has more of a YA [Young Adult] vibe to it.”

Among the other heroes closely associated with the ‘New Mutants’ in the comics are Danielle Moonstar/Mirage, Karma, Cannonball, Wolfsbane, Magik, Magma, Cypher, Warlock and Boom Boom.  But of course there are many others.

At least one draft of a script has been completed.  The film does not currently have a release date scheduled nor is production set to begin.
