The Joker may be the Clown Prince of Crime, but Joaquin Phoenix is the newly crowned King of Hollywood after earning the Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture — Drama for ‘Joker’.  The 77th annual fete was held on Sunday, January 5th.  Phoenix bested Christian Bale, who was nominated for ‘Ford v Ferrari’, Antonio Banderas for ‘Pain and Glory’, Jonathan Pryce for ‘The Two Popes’, and Adam Driver for ‘Marriage Story’.

‘Joker’ was also nominated for Best Motion Picture — Drama, Best Director for Todd Phillips, and Best Score for Hildur Guðnadóttir.  ‘1917’ won the Best Picture prize, and its director Sam Mendes won for Best Director.  Also nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama were ‘The Irishman’, ‘The Two Popes’, and ‘Marriage Story’.  Other nominees for Best Director were Martin Scorsese for ‘The Irishman’, Quentin Tarantino for ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’, and Bong Joon-ho for ‘Parasite’.  (‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ won for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy.)

Guðnadóttir won for Best Score, beating Thomas Newman for ‘1917’, Randy Newman for ‘Marriage Story’, Alexandre Desplat for ‘Little Women’, and Daniel Pemberton for ‘Motherless Brooklyn’.  In doing so, Guðnadóttir became the first solo woman to win in this category.  Previously, Lisa Gerrard won the award along with Hans Zimmer for their score to ‘Gladiator’.
