Jayme Lawson
The Juilliard School

‘The Batman’ has added a newcomer to its cast– recent Juilliard graduate Jayme Lawson, who has been cast in an undisclosed role.  At any rate, it’s quite a score for someone who doesn’t even have their own IMDB page yet!

Matt Reeves is directing, and penned the script.  Lawson joins Robert Pattinson as Batman/Bruce Wayne, Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman/Selina Kyle, Paul Dano as The Riddler/Edward Nashton, and Jeffery Wright as Commissioner James Gordon.  It has recently been reported that Colin Farrell is in talks to play The Penguin, with Andy Serkis in negotiations to portray Alfred Pennyworth.  Serkis previously worked with Reeves on ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ and ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’.

DC Comics

It is reported that Reeves’ screenplay also includes appearances by Firefly, The Mad Hatter, Two-Face, and Robin (Dick Grayson), so it’s possible that Lawson could be playing a reinvented version of one of them, but there is nothing saying that this newcomer will be playing a major character.  (But a black female Robin, could be pretty cool!)

In a video posted on Juilliard’s website, that has since been made private, Lawson expressed that Catwoman was a dream project for her, but of course, Kravitz is playing that role in this picture.  But maybe she could use a henchwoman?

While studying at Juilliard, Lawson played the lead in ‘Hamlet’, a role usually reserved for a male, plus Juliet in ‘Romeo & Juliet’ and Lady Macbeth in ‘Macbeth’.  She is currently starring as Lady in Red in ‘For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide’/’When the Rainbow Is Enuf’ at the Public Theater.  The show has not been staged since it debuted in 1976.

‘The Batman’ may begin filming before the end of this year, but if not, it should kick off in early 2020.  It is scheduled for release on June 25, 2020.
