We know that the Marvel Cinematic Universe almost introduced Nova in the original ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and now have learned that Marvel Studios wanted to give us Richard Rider in ‘Avengers: Infinity War.’ This fun new detail comes from co-writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely who have now shared that Nova was almost a key player in the final two “Avengers” films that would bring “The Infinity Saga” to a close.
We know that Thanos destroyed Xandar to retrieve the Power Stone, and this would have played directly into the origin story of Nova had the initial pitch played out. According to Markus:
“We actually had, I remember in the big manifesto thing that we did, where the first work we did on these movies where we just… every possible storyline that you could take from what’s around, that Nova has the Xandarian Worldmind. Yeah, the Xandarian Worldmind, was that after… it was almost going… In this conception, he would be the herald, not unlike the Hulk, who was actually standing in for the Silver Surfer, but that one member of the Nova Corps survived Thanos’ attack. The Xandarian Worldmind would be the voice of Glenn Close, because you had her, and why not? And that he would be Richard Rider, and he would come to earth.”

This would have been a great way to keep Glenn Close in the MCU while also sadly taking John C. Reilly‘s character off the board. While Markus feels that using Nova “would’ve been amazing,” his writing partner McFeely did point out that:
“But you’re introducing a whole new character when we’re trying to say goodbye to all the ones that you know.”
With the high runtimes of both these films, it may very well have been a stretch to introduce yet another new character. Especially, as it would be one who had to survive the events of the film to play a significant part in the future installments of the cosmic side of the MCU.
Would you have been thrilled to see Nova introduced in ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ or do you feel that the movie was perfect the way it was? Who would you love to see portray Richard Rider in the MCU? Share your thoughts in the comments below, True Believers!
