As a father to a developmentally disabled son, I have one secret superpower that most parents don’t enjoy — I get to watch all of the animated and kids movies and enjoy them openly without it seeming weird – forever!  One of those shows that I’ll be seeing with my boy is ‘Spies in Disguise’ starring the unlikely matchup of Tom Holland and Will Smith.  I can’t really put my finger on why, but I find the thought of these two actors sharing a screen rather dissonant.  However, a DC crossover of Deadshot and Spider-Man would be pretty cool!

In ‘Spies in Disguise,’ Smith voices a character names Lance Sterling, an international super spy.  Holland gives life to the spy house tech department geek Walter Beckett.   We don’t know a whole lot more than what is in the trailers.  From the first trailer, it looked like the story was mostly about Walter turning Lance into a pigeon.  Walter then tries to convince Lance that being a pigeon is even better because nobody pays attention to pigeons.  The brief banter teases us with almost a trademark Will Smith, “Aw, hell no!” but instead just makes a butt joke.  However, 20th Century Fox has released a new trailer that reveals a little more.

Now we know that Walter was actually trying to invent an invisibility potion, but when Lance drinks it, it has the unintended side effect of sending him to pigeon-topia.  We also get our first glimpses of the bad guy doing usual bad guy stuff, blowing up cars, looking dastardly, and sneering.

As is usual for animated films lately, ‘Spies in Disguise’ comes with a start-studded cast including Rashida Jones, Ben Mendelsohn, Reba McEntire, Rachel Brosnahan, Karen Gillan, DJ Khaled, and Masi Oka.

I’m sure there will be some fun animation, lots of quippy lines, and eye-catching visuals.  It’ll be a good time.  If you don’t have kids, go borrow your nieces and nephews or offer to babysit for your neighbors.  This one looks good!  See it around Christmas.
