Robert Downey Jr. As Tony Stark / Iron Man
Marvel Studios/Disney

Could it be?  Can we possibly be getting another big-screen appearance of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man?  It looks to be so!  ‘Black Widow’ is set after the events of ‘Captain America: Civil War’, but prior to ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, and it appears that Downey will make his last (?) Marvel Studios appearance in that film.

While reporting the winners of the 45th Annual Saturn Awards, Deadline mentioned that Downey, scored the trophy for Best Actor in a Film, would be making one last appearance in his famous role:

“Downey will be seen in the role of Stark one more time, however, in the Marvel prequel Black Widow in May 2020.”

Deadline isn’t a gossip or rumor website.  It’s a solid entertainment news site, with a lot of resources to confirm facts, so if they are reporting this, it’s most likely true.  It’s a bit odd that this fact wasn’t announced with more fanfare, or on the opposite end of the spectrum, wasn’t kept locked down under the strictest secrecy.  But this was just a casual mention in a report on something mostly unrelated.

Scarlett Johansson‘s Natasha Romanoff sided with Stark during the ‘Civil War’ conflict (mostly), so it would make sense that the two would still be in contact during the time between that film and ‘Infinity War’.

The ‘Black Widow’ film will elaborate on Natasha’s murky background, including her being raised in the Russian Red Room to be a master assassin and spy.  Co-starring with Johansson are: Florence Pugh as a new Black Widow, Yelena Belova; David Harbour, as Alexei Shostakov, the Red Guardian, who may or may not be Natasha’s ex-husband; Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff, another Black Widow; and O-T Fagbenle, whose character is named Mason.  Ray Winstone has a role that has not been disclosed.

The world’s tallest bodybuilder at 7’2″ (damn!), Dutch-born Olivier Richter has joined the cast, with many guessing that he will portray the film’s big villain, the Taskmaster, but it seems he simply has a bit role as a prisoner in a Russian gulag.

MARVEL 🤩!!! I can finally tell you guys! For the last 3 weeks, I have been in the UK filming my part for the movie: Black Widow (Marvel Studios) 😱. This year in January, for the first time in my life I started to join castings for movies, who would have thought that I got to start with ”The King’s Man”, then of to ”Gangs of London (HBO)” and now Black Widow (Marvel). If someone in 2018 told me my career in the movie industry would start like this, I would have called an ambulance for him 😁. It has always been my dream to do something with my size. Can’t wait for all the releases in 2020.
