Rachel Weisz (‘The Bourne Legacy’,’The Mummy’) has confirmed that the ‘Black Widow’ movie is going to feature multiple characters who go by the Black Widow name. While Scarlett Johansson‘s character is the main person who we’ve seen use the name in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it has already been hinted that she isn’t the only graduate from The Red Room and just like the comics, it is a title and not just a codename. With a focus on Natasha Romanoff, director Cate Shortland was smart to put a focus on her training and past as we get our final send-off of the iconic character.

During this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Weisz revealed:

“There are quite a number. I’m a Black Widow, and there’s Scarlett and Florence. There’s quite a bit of other characters you’ll also meet that are Black Widows.”

Fans who have seen ‘Agent Carter’ may have realized that Bridget Regan’s Dottie Underwood was likely a Black Widow as well. In the comics, Natasha was the graduate of a Soviet spy program where trainees were inducted in The Red Room to be the ultimate spies and those who graduated became Black Widows. Natasha is often thought of as the best of the best when it came to those who survived the program.

In the film’s we’ve heard hints of how dark her past was before Hawkeye recruited her to S.H.I.E.L.D., giving her a chance to turn her life around.

It should be noted that with a new Captain America and King of Asgard, this could be laying the groundwork for a new Black Widow for The Avengers as well.
