It appears that Florence Pugh’s role in ‘Black Widow’ has been confirmed, and it’s what most have suspected all along.  A Twitter user in Hungary, R0CKYSY0UTH, has posted two pics from the set of the newest Marvel Studios film, which you can check out below.  (I’ll explain after.)

Wondering what are you looking at?  The two boxes contain life-size mannequins of Scarlett Johansson and Pugh, which will be used in some sort of stunt.  The boxes are labeled, “Natasha” and “Yelena,” indicating that Pugh is indeed playing the newer Black Widow, Yelena Belova.

In the comics, Yelena Belova grew up in Russia’s Red Room, the same as Natasha Romanoff.  She was originally sent to kill Natasha but wound up working with her.  Belova has gone back and forth between being a good guy, a bad guy, and an anti-hero.  She has operated for SHIELD, as well as AIM and Hydra.  At one time, under AIM’s control, she was given the power of the Super-Adaptoid, but she has since reverted back to her normal human form.

Of course, the films vary from the comics quite a bit.  It remains to be seen how Pugh’s Belova will be depicted in the ‘Black Widow’ movie.  However, one massive difference at this point is that in the movies, Natasha is dead.  That opens the door to Pugh’s Black Widow becoming THE Black Widow moving forward.

Cate Shortland is directing, based on a screenplay by Jac Schaeffer, with revisions by Ned Benson.  Obviously, Scarlett Johansson will be back in the title role, and she will also serve as executive producer, a first for an actor in a Marvel Studios movie.

In addition to Pugh, the cast includes O-T Fagbenle, David Harbour, Rachel Weisz, and Ray Winstone.

Technically speaking, Marvel Studios has not even confirmed that ‘Black Widow’ is in the works, even though it is now filming.  But they have an unnamed movie scheduled to open on May 1, 2020, and this could very well be it.  It’s even possible that we will learn more when Marvel Studios makes its presentation at San Diego Comic-Con in a few weeks.

Are you excited that Yelena Belova could be entering the MCU?
