Frankenstein’s Monster’s Monster, Frankenstein david harbour

David Harbour is going from one Big Red in a comic adaptation to another as he’ll be starring as Red Guardian in the upcoming ‘Black Widow’ movie after the failed ‘Hellboy’ reboot. The character is basically the Russian version of Captain America, and that is exactly why the actor is enjoying playing Alexei.

According to Harbor, “That’s one of the things I really like about this character/ There’s an openness to interpretation. The one thing we do is know is that he’s the counterpart to Captain America on the Russian Soviet side, but that way we have a lot of play with who he is and we are playing with him.”

With this in mind, you have to imagine how someone who grew up on the other side of the Cold War would feel about their country and being given an opportunity to be a super-soldier. Harbour went on to share that “Initially when I heard the pitch she [director Cate Shortland] was like ‘He’s this, and he’s this,’ and I was like ‘Yeah, I got it.’…he spins, and he twists, and he turns in ways that make sense and in ways I don’t expect characters to go there. I expect characters to be a color or a flavor, and we get to know them, and this guy is really rich.”

With the Cold War era plot that came from the third season of ‘Stranger Things’ it will be interesting to see how Harbour reacts on the other end of the conflict. As to how much he enjoyed working with Shortland on putting the film together, “This woman, Cate Shortland, who is directing this movie is one of the best directors I’ve ever worked with. She’s so, so smart, and makes such beautiful indie movies. The fact that you’d put someone like that at the helm of one of these huge action movies — and she pays such attention to the story and such attention to character — speaks volumes.”

We’ve long seen Marvel Studios giving more indie filmmakers a chance at directing their blockbusters and ‘Black Widow’ looks to be no different. I’m eager to check out how this spy film will play out and if this could lead into an introduction to Red Guardian that sees him returning in a future movie.
