Zoe Saldana‘s Gamora is one of the most beloved characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it now appears that she wasn’t the first choice for the role, and the ‘Galaxy’ as we know it may have been very different.

Although she didn’t specifically say that she was offered the role of Gamora, ‘The Art of Racing in the Rain’s Amanda Seyfried divulged that she was offered a role in a superhero movie, which she turned out because she didn’t want to spend six months being green!  (Hey, it’s not easy!  Or so they say.)

In a video interview with Yahoo! to promote her new sad dog movie, Seyfried stated:

“I turned down [a superhero movie] once and they haven’t called back since.  And it was a big one. I don’t regret it because I didn’t want to be green for six months out of every year. They tell beautiful stories through superheroes, and my daughter’s now really obsessed with superheroes now, and part of me wishes I’d done it, but the other part of me is like ‘I had a life to live’ and I don’t think I would’ve been happy.”

We’ll never know if fans would have been happy with Seyfried as Gamora.  Seyfried is an accomplished actor and is probably best known for starring in the two ‘Mama Mia!’ musicals.  Among her other credits are ‘Les Misérables’ and ‘Mean Girls’.

But at this point, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who thinks that anyone other than Saldana would be perfect for the role of Gamora.  Seyfried is in good company, though.  Married couple John Krasinski and Emily Blunt are among the stars who are famous for turning down Marvel roles– Krasinksi for Captain America (he thought the costume looked ridiculous), and Blunt for Black Widow (she chose to make ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ with Jack Black instead– OUCH!).

Things probably worked out best for everyone.  As successful as the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movies are, it doesn’t sound like making them would have been Seyfried’s cup of tea.

Her current film, ‘The Art of Racing in the Rain’ is playing in theaters now.
