Fans of Guillermo del Toro and the darker side of the DC Universe will long lament his take on ‘Justice League Dark‘ never seeing the light of day… or the dark of night. While the movie just wasn’t meant to be, the iconic creator is sharing what had fueled his passion for the project.

According to del Toro in a recent interview with Comicbook.com, the short answer as to why he was so passionate about bringing the film to life is that “Well, I co-wrote a whole screenplay on Justice League Dark for Warner Bros., so that’s your answer.” Obviously, there was more though:

“I love Deadman, I love Demon, I love Swamp Thing…Zatanna. That’s a universe, is one thing. I’m very attracted to that side of the DC Universe.”

He did go on to specify “that side of the DC Universe” was key:

“I’m not a superhero guy. For me to like a superhero, the superhero needs to be a monster. I’m not into those things, I’ve never been. I’m always in favor of monster narratives. That’s what I like. Or, I love noir. I love police, crime dramas. I love science fiction.”

When you start thinking about, that does make sense considering the tone of both ‘Hellboy’ movies as well as ‘Blade II.’

Don’t get your hopes up that this means other adaptations could be coming as del Toro recently shared that it is unlikely he’ll make another comic book movie. Even if DC and Warner Bros. decided to change course, it sounds like the director no longer would want to pursue creating a ‘Justice League Dark’ film considering his stance on comic book movies.
