Fans of ‘Aquaman‘ were probably hoping James Wan would return to direct a sequel for his next outing but the famed director returning to horror. Wan made his name in the industry on horror films such as ‘Saw’ and ‘The Conjuring’ before branching off into blockbusters like ‘Furious 7’ so it should come as no surprise that he would love to return to the genre that he loves. Wan still has plenty on his plate in the area for producing upcoming films such as ‘The Tommyknockers’ and ‘The Nun 2,’ but his next directorial outing is going to be something completely new.

According to Wan:

“There’s been a bit of speculation as to what my next project is… all I’ll say is, I’m super excited to go back to my indie roots with this hard-R thriller. An original horror idea (not a reboot/remake or anything based on existing IP) with old school, practical effects and no giant, blue screen sets.”

Fans hoping that he might be directing a new Conjuring film or, considering this will be for New Line, a reboot of ‘Salem’s Lot‘ or ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ are going to be disappointed. However, the rest of us should be thrilled as every new property Wan tends to be involved in is something worth watching!

The director did say “That’s all I’ll say for now” when it comes to the project, but hopefully new details will be popping up soon. We do know that the movie is slated to film in LA this Fall and Wan co-wrote the screenplay with actress Ingrid Bisu. Wan is also producing through Atomic Monster with Michael Clear.

No matter what sub-genre of horror that Wan ends up doing, I’ll likely be lining up to check it out on opening day. Wan no longer needs to prove that he’ll deliver a solid movie and this will undoubtedly be something worth checking out.
