Hellboy 3

A third theatrical chapter to endcap Guillermo del Toro‘s idea for a ‘Hellboy‘ trilogy never materialized and it sounds like at one point a ‘Hellboy 3’ comic had been pitched to finish off the tale. The reason it never happened? Franchise creator Mike Mignola.

For fans, a comic seems like it would have been the next best thing to finish off this unique story based on the original works. However, according to Mignola:

“I think del Toro mentioned it to me once, and I said no. I think, let the comics be the comics. Comics are confusing enough for people. Let’s not have two different versions of the Hellboy comic out there. My vote would be (to say) no.”

We may one day get a ‘Hellboy’ TV series which Mignola supports happening, but it is unlikely that it would involve either Perlman as the character or follow del Toro’s vision for the final film. At this point, the only unlikely chance that the story will ever see the light of day were to be if they ended up making an animated feature as was done with ‘Hellboy: Sword of Storms’ and ‘Hellboy: Blood and Iron’ as both of these features were set in del Toro’s version of the character.

At this point, I’d be open to even reading the script to find out how the story would have played out.

Do you think ‘Hellboy 3’ could ever see the light of day in print or animated form? Which medium would you most want to see it in with a live-action and likely comic book take off the table? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
