CBS All Access is taking ‘Star Trek’ where no one has gone before, and that’s everywhere all at once. ‘Discovery’ is headed off into a new direction for its upcoming third season. ‘Picard’ will draw from the past and rocket into the future. And ‘Lower Decks’? Well, it’s heading into the absurd.
Focusing on the support crew of one Starfleet’s least important ships, the U.S.S. Cerritos, ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ was created by ‘Rick & Morty’s Mike McMahan. The first season will consist of ten episodes. While a trailer wasn’t shown at the SDCC ‘Star Trek’ panel, artwork was, along with the voice cast, which will be led by Jack Quaid.
Check out the artwork below:
Quaid’s character, Ensign Boimler appears to be the star of the show. Quaid recently lent his voice to play Richie Rich on the Netflix cartoon ‘Harvey Girls Forever!’. He stars in the upcoming Amazon series ‘The Boys’ and appeared in the movie ‘Logan Lucky’. He is the son of Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan.
Tawny Newsome voices Ensign Mariner. Most recently, she portrayed Gabby Taylor on the third season of IFC’s ‘Brockmire’. She has done voice work on ‘Big Mouth’.
Eugene Cordero, who voices Ensign Rutherford, also stars on the truTV comedy series ‘Tacoma FD’. He has provided voices for ‘Star Vs. the Forces of Evil’, ‘Steven Universe’, and ‘Son of Zorn’.
Noël Wells wrote, directed, and starred in the film ‘Mr. Roosevelt’, and is probably best known for playing Rachel in the first season of ‘Master of None’. She has done extensive voice work on ‘Craig of the Creek’, ‘American Dad!’, ‘Elena of Avalor’, ‘Wander Over Yonder’, ‘Gentlemen Lobsters’, and ‘The Awesomes’. She voices Ensign Tendi on ‘Lower Decks’.
These four characters appear to be the stars of this series, but on a regular ‘Star Trek’ series, the focus would be on the Bridge Crew, who will also appear on ‘Lower Decks’. That cast consists of Fred Tatasciore as Lt. Shaxs, Dawnn Lewis as Captain Freeman, Jerry O’Connell as Commander Ransom, and Gillian Vigman as Dr. T’Ana.
For some reason, this artwork of the Holodeck was also unveiled at SDCC:
It was not announced when ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ would premiere.
STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS will focus on the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships. The series will be produced by CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, CBS Television Studios’ new animation arm; Secret Hideout; and Roddenberry Entertainment. Secret Hideout’s Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin and Roddenberry Entertainment’s Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth and Katie Krentz will serve as executive producers alongside creator Mike McMahan (“Rick and Morty”). Aaron Baiers (Secret Hideout), who brought McMahan to the project, will serve as a co-executive producer. The series will air exclusively on CBS All Access in the United States and will be distributed concurrently internationally by CBS Studios International.
