Mehcad Brooks Will Exit 'Supergirl' During The Upcoming Fifth Season

Mehcad Brooks is moving away from National City.  The actor who plays James Olsen on ‘Supergirl’ will depart at some point during Season 5.  Interestingly, this news follows the revelation that Azie Tesfai, who plays James’ sister Kelly Olsen, was becoming a series regular this season.  So at least there will be someone from the Olsen family present, something the showrunners, Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller, mentioned in their statement.

“We love Mehcad and we’re sad to see him leave the show as a series regular, but we’re excited for both Mehcad and James Olsen’s future.  He’ll always be a part of our Supergirl family and we look forward to James returning to National City at some point to visit his sister and his super friends.”

Brooks is developing a new cable series in which he will star.  He is also interested in getting into theatrical films and is working on a book.  James was originally intended to be a romantic interest for Kara (Melissa Benoist), but once that fizzled out, the show has clearly struggled to find a purpose for him.  Most recently, he became the armored hero The Guardian.

One thing that can be inferred, is that James won’t be killed off, as Rovner and Queller mention him returning to visit.

In addition to Tesfai, Andrea Brooks, who plays Eve Tessmacher, is also being promoted to series regular, and it was just announced that Jeremy Jordan, a.k.a. Winn Schott will return for three episodes in the latter half of Season 5.  Tyler Hoechlin will also reprise his role as Superman, but details are unknown.

As for Supergirl herself, she got bangs and will sport a new costume with leggings instead of her famous red miniskirt.

Like the rest of The CW’s DC shows, ‘Supergirl’ will become entangled in the ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ crossover event this fall.

‘Supergirl’ returns for its fifth season on Sunday, October 6 at 9pm EST on The CW.
