RUMOR ALERT: Take the following with a grain of salt, as it is strictly RUMOR at this point.

Even though Marvel Studios’ ‘Black Widow’ is expected to begin filming soon, with a script by Jac Schaeffer, Ned Benson was recently brought on board to re-write it, and now it sounds as though he isn’t just fine-tuning it.  The latest word is that he has added a new younger character and that the studio is tossing around names that they would like to see in the role.

Reportedly, this new role is small, but the studio is seeking a young female of color between the ages of 15-25.  That’s a pretty significant range.  While my first reaction is that they were seeking to add a part similar to Natalie Portman’s from ‘Léon the Professional’, that would require a lot of training before production began, so that may be out of the question.

The names that are RUMORED to be under consideration are Storm Reid, Isabela Moner, Camila Mendes, and Hannah Quinlivan.

Storm Reid, 15, broke into the big time by headlining last year’s ‘A Wrinkle in Time’.  She will next be seen in the HBO drama series ‘Euphoria’ with Zendaya.  She also has two other projects that are wrapped and expected later this year, the movie ‘Killing Winston Jones’, starring Richard Dreyfuss, and the Netflix miniseries ‘When They See Us’, previously known as ‘The Central Park Five’, created by ‘Wrinkle’s Ava DuVernay and co-produced by Harpo Productions, owned by her co-star Oprah Winfrey.

Isabela Moner, 17, played Mark Wahlberg’s daughter Izabella in ‘Transformers: The Last Knight’, and Mark Wahlberg’s daughter Lizzy in ‘Instant Family’.  She stars as the titular hero in ‘Dora the Explorer’, which comes out in August.  Just for the heck of it, here’s a look at that:

One obstacle to her joining ‘Black Widow’ is that Moner is currently filming another film, ‘Let it Snow’ for Netflix, with ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’s Shameik Moore, ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’s Kiernan Shipka, and ‘Spider-Man: Far from Homes’s Jacob Batalon.

Jumping way forward, Camila Mendes is 24 and is best known for playing Veronica Lodge on ‘Riverdale’.  She has two films completed, ‘The Perfect Date’ for Netflix, with Laura Marano, and Noah Centineo, and thriller ‘Coyote Lake’.

Hannah Quinlivan, 25, appeared opposite Dwayne Johnson in last year’s ‘Skyscraper’.  She does not appear to have any upcoming projects.

Since this ‘Black Widow’ role is a mystery, it’s not clear who would be better suited, but there is definitely a big gap in age between Reid and Moner– both still teenage girls– and Mendes and Quinlivan, who are basically full-grown women.

Then again, what if there is no new mystery role?  Keep in mind, this is just a rumor, so that is a possibility.

Check back for further updates.

‘Black Widow’ is due in theaters on May 1, 2020.
