Fans of Robert Jordan’s ‘Wheel of Time‘ series have reason to celebrate as Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television has just cast Rosamund Pike (‘The World’s End,’ ‘Gone Girl’) in the leading role!

‘Wheel of Time’ is an extensive series which has sold over 90 million copies globally. The world which Jordan has created consists of 15 novels, a prequel novel, and two companion books meaning that there is plenty of source material to flesh out and give craft this into being a proper ongoing series. The streaming arm of Amazon was able to pick up the series in October and has been actively developing it since that time.

The show is being crafted by Rave Judkins (‘Agents of SHIELD,’ ‘Hemlock Grove‘) who was tapped as the showrunner. On top of that, he’ll serve as an executive producer with Larry Mondragon and Rick Selvage of Red Eagle Entertainment, Ted Field and Mike Weber of Radar Pictures, Darren Lemke (‘Shazam’), Marigo Kehoe, and Uta Briesewitz (‘Stranger Things,’ ‘Jessica Jones’.) Briesewitz is also directing the first two episodes of the series.

In this epic fantasy world, magic exists but can only be used by certain women and Amazon’s adaptation won’t be deviating from that:

The drama follows Moiraine (Pike), a member of the incredibly powerful all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, as she arrives in the small town of Two Rivers. There, she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, who will either save or destroy humanity.

Pike isn’t just acting in the show though but will also produce with Harriet McDougal, and Brandon Sanderson attached as consulting producers. Previously, Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke stated that “The Wheel of Time is endlessly fascinating and resonates hugely with fans as one of the best-selling global book franchises, and we were drawn to its timely narrative featuring powerful women at the core.”
