It looks increasingly as though Lex Luthor will appear on ‘Titans’ Season 2, as Natalie Gumede has landed the role of Mercy Graves, Luthor’s valet, and bodyguard. We already knew that Joshua Orpin was joining the series as Superboy, who is a clone crafted using the DNA of Luthor and Superman, so it would make sense that either or both of his “dads” would appear. Mercy’s presence looks to be step one in the revelation that Luthor will have some sort of presence on the show. Superboy made a silent cameo at the end of the last episode of ‘Titans’ Season 1, embodied by a stunt performer.
On the series, Mercy is described:
“Mercy Graves is the ruthless, cunning, right hand and bodyguard to the notorious Lex Luthor – serving her boss with unquestioned loyalty. Her connection to the Luthors runs deep, as Mercy has been a friend of the family and in Lex’s life since they were young.”
Like Harley Quinn and Renee Montoya, Mercy was first introduced in the animated DCU, on ‘Superman: The Animated Series’ in 1996. In addition to entering the comics, Mercy has been animated in multiple forms. She has had every color of hair possible, and in the live-action ‘Batman V Superman’ she was played by Japanese actor Tao Okamoto. Caucasian Rhona Mitra played her recently on ‘Supergirl’, on which Jon Cryer appeared as Lex.
Clearly, ‘Titans’ doesn’t take place in the same reality as The CW’s superhero shows, so we’ll have to wait and see how the show handles Luthor. It’s entirely possible that he’ll simply be a shadowy presence the way that Batman was in Season 1.
Gumede is British, and therefore most of her work has been on British TV shows, including ‘Ideal’ and ‘Coronation Street’. Genre fans are more likely to recognize her for playing Ashley in the 2014 ‘Doctor Who Christmas Special’, “Last Christmas,” or as crime boss Isabella Charming on ‘Jekyll & Hyde’. More recently, she was part of the cast of Netflix’s ‘Free Reign’.
‘Titans’ Season 2 is expected to arrive later this year.
