Heel! Warner Brothers Pushes 'Super Pets' To 2022

Warner Brothers has delayed the release of ‘Super Pets’, a DC Comics-inspired animated theatrical movie featuring– what else?– the pets of DC’s stable of superheroes and villains.  (Yep, even criminals need unconditional love!)  WB first announced the film last August, and in January, scheduled it to open on Memorial Day weekend, May 21, 2021.  But now ‘Super Pets’ has been pushed to May 22, 2022.

The film will apparently draw from the popular line of ‘DC Super Pets’ books for elementary school-age kids, published by Capstone.  Jared Stern (Netflix’s ‘Happy Anniversary’) and Sam Levine (‘Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero’, ‘Robot and Monster’) are co-directing.  Among Stern’s previous writing credits include ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ (with Levine), ‘The LEGO Batman Movie’, and ‘The LEGO Ninjago Movie’.  Patty Hicks (the ‘Minions’ franchise) is producing.

We don’t yet know which animals will appear in ‘Super Pets’, but considering the encyclopedic cameos in ‘The LEGO Batman Movie’, the options are nearly limitless.

Guaranteed to be included is Superman’s Krypto the Superdog, who first appeared in 1955’s ‘Adventure Comics’ #210.  Other possible candidates include Beppo the Supermonkey, Supergirl’s Streaky the Supercat, and Comet the Superhorse.

The same year that Krypto entered Superman’s world, 1955, Ace the Bathound showed up in the pages of ‘Batman’ #92.  In 1956’s ‘Adventure Comics’ #229, readers were introduced to Aquaman’s trusty pet octopus Topo.  Aquaman and Aqualad also ride around on giant seahorses named Storm and Imp.

Wonder Woman rides around on a giant kangaroo-like creature (a “Kanga”) named Jumpa.  Blue space monkey Gleek is the companion of the Wonder Twins.  Among the other critters included in the books are Robin’s bird Robin Robin, The Flash’s turtle Whatzit, Plastic Man’s Plastic Frog, and a variety of Green Lantern-based creatures.

On the opposite side, the villains are accompanied by the likes of Bizarro’s Bizarro Krypto, Brainiac’s Brainicat, The Joker and Harley Quinn’s hyenas Crackers and Giggles, as well as the Joker Fish, Catwoman’s feline Rozz, The Penguin’s flock– Artie Puffin (a puffin), Griff (a vulture), and Waddles (a penguin), Cheetah’s cheetah Chauncey, Black Manta’s manta rays Misty and Sneezers, and Giganta’s giraffe Patches.  (Among others.)  The books also often employed villains like Gorilla Grodd and Starro, who themselves, are animals.

Check back for updates on ‘Super Pets’ as they arrive.  Which pets would you most like to see in the movie?
