Super Pets

The ‘Shazam!’ trailer proved that Warner Brothers is prepared to lighten up when it comes to their DC Comics properties, but their latest project is taking things even further.  Jared Stern, who wrote the screenplays for ‘The LEGO Batman Movie’ and ‘The LEGO Ninjago Movie’ is set to tackle an animated film based on the Super Pets.  Stern also directed two other WB animated flicks, ‘Storks’ and the upcoming ‘Smallfoot’.  Of course, WB currently has an animated superhero movie in theaters, ‘Teen Titans GO! To the Movies’ based on the Cartoon Network series.

Very little is known about ‘Super Pets’ at this point.  The ‘Legion of Super Pets’ first appeared in 1962’s ‘Adventure Comics’ #293, uniting Superman’s pets, Krypto the Superdog and Beppo the Supermonkey, plus Supergirl’s cat Streaky and horse Comet.  They were also at times joined by a shape-shifting alien called Proty that was kept as a pet by Chameleon Boy of the Legion of Superheroes.

Beginning in 2010, Capstone Publishing began printing a series of ‘Super Pets’ books for elementary age readers.  In addition to Krypto, Beppo, Streaky and Comet, the books featured Ace the Bat-Hound, Wonder Woman’s Kanga (a horse-sized kangaroo indigenous to Themyscira) Jumpa, Aquaman’s seahorse Storm and octopus Topo, the chipmunk-like Green Lantern B’Dg, Hoppy the Shazam! Bunny and the Wonder Twins’ space monkey Gleek.  The books, which featured illustrations by Eisner Award winner Art Baltazar, also introduced new pets like Robin’s pet bird Robin Robin and a pet turtle for The Flash named Whatzit!.  The villains also had pets, like Isis, Catwoman’s kitty that first appeared on ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ and Harley Quinn’s hyenas Bud and Lou.  (In more recent appearances, Isis has been renamed Rozz, for obvious reasons.)

In the mainstream DC comics, a modern version of the Super Pets recently appeared and also included Damian Wayne’s dog Titus and Batcow.

Just for fun, here is a poster released by Capstone to promote its books:

Considering that animated movies take longer to produce than live action, this movie probably won’t arrive until at least 2020.  But check back for updates as they surface.
