Lost In Space

‘Lost In Space’ was a hit when it premiered on Netflix a little over a year ago and was quickly renewed for a second season.  The new series was written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, with Zack Estrin serving as showrunner.  The series follows a group of Earth natives who flee the planet, on a craft called The Resolute, as doom threatens its existence, with the intention of locating a hospitable planet where the population can be relocated.  But after an alien attack, the Robinson family and others find themselves stranded on a strange planet, searching for a way off, and to reconnect with The Resolute.  In the meantime, they spend their time aboard the smaller shuttlecraft, the Jupiter 2.

Of course, this flashy new series was inspired by the show created by Irwin Allen (who is credited as the creator of the new incarnation, as well), which aired from 1965-68, and in reruns consistently afterward.  With the new Netflix series about to arrive on Blu-Ray, a new bonus feature has been released, and fans of the original should be happy.  In this clip, first-gen cast member Bill Mumy, who played the precocious tween Will Robinson (played by Maxwell Jenkins in the remake) steps aboard the new Jupiter 2 and has an encounter with an updated version of a character he has a lot of familiarity with.

The new Robot is a lot more versatile and futuristic than the rather static original, but that one had its charms.

Mumy actually appears in the pilot episode, as a character named “Doctor Z. Smith,” an homage to Jonathan Harris’ character on the original show, with whom Mumy shared most of his scenes.

Over the years, Mumy has also appeared on other sci-fi classics like ‘Babylon 5’, and ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine‘.

The Blu-Ray for ‘Lost In Space’ comes packed with extras that should delight fans– and justify buying something you can watch basically for free whenever you want.
