There were a lot of great surprises in ‘Avengers: Endgame‘ and one of the best is when Captain America was wielding a weapon that wasn’t his shield. It came as a surprise to many and gave us one of the best action sequences in the entire film which had the entire audience cheering. Now, The Russo Brothers have opened up as to why they made the scene and a little bit of backstory that you’ll get a kick out of!

That is about as vague as I can get without crossing over into spoiler territory so this is your chance to turn back!
So, of course, we’re talking about Cap being able to wield Mjolnir after Thor brought his weapon into the fight against Thanos. In one of the best action sequences in the film, we saw Steve Rogers do what fans have been hoping to see since it was teased in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’!
According to the Russos:
“I think it goes all the way back to Ultron. You know it was something that uh… I think that every one that is a Marvel fan in that moment where Cap tested the hammer felt deep down in the heart that he was worthy and he could potentially lift that. Boy wouldn’t it be special one day if he did. And you know obviously, if you create drama around the circumstances of him wielding the hammer and then kicking Thanos’ ass for thirty seconds after that we could..we felt like we could create a raisable moment for the audience.”
Speaking of what they teased in ‘Age of Ultron’ it appears that the small movement we saw in the film was actually Cap restraining himself. The First Avenger not only was already able to lift Mjolnir he just didn’t out of respect for his friend!
“Well in our heads he was able to wield it. And he didn’t know that until that moment in Ultron when he tried to pick it up but Cap’s sense of character and his sort of humility and his..sort of like out of deference to Thor’s ego..you know…Cap in that moment realizing that he can move the hammer decides not to.”
That Steve Rogers was really written as the perfect hero!
Do you think that the Russo Brothers had planned parts of this out as far back as ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ or did this narrative get developed after they wanted to see Cap using Mjolnir in ‘Avengers: Endgame’?
