Pennyworth

EPIX’s new series ‘Pennyworth’ is due to arrive this summer, and trailers and photos have already surfaced to give viewers an idea of what to expect.   The series focuses on Alfred Pennyworth, a character that most people know as Batman’s butler, but has lived a colorful and action-packed life himself, prior to taking care of the orphaned Bruce Wayne.  The show will depict how Pennyworth first meets Bruce’s father, Thomas, in swingin’ MOD 1960s London.

“Not even Thomas Wayne’s friends call him Tom — always Thomas.”

A young– and unmarried– Thomas Wayne, portrayed by Ben Aldridge, finds himself in need of Alfred’s unique services, while in London.  This meeting leads to a long and legendary partnership.

“Confident and extremely disciplined, this young aristocrat meets an unlikely business partner in Alfred Pennyworth.”

Jason Flemyng plays one of ‘Pennyworth’s two major villains, “an upper-class Englishman” named Lord Harwood, who is described as “cultured, urbane, brilliant, and supremely sure of himself. His sadistic, cruel nature has a veneer of charm.”  Lord Harwood is not based on an existing DC Comics villain, but he will not be the only baddie on this series.

Recording artist Paloma Faith portrays Bet Sykes, a “spirited, sadistic, and sharp-tongued” villainess who teams up with Lord Harwood to take on Alfred and Thomas.

It’s not often we get to see Alfred as a ladies man, but this twentysomething Pennyworth gets a leading lady in the form of Emma Corrin as Esme,  “a beautiful, alert, theatrical, and clever dancer with an upper-class flair” who has “a determined, skittish spirit with a bohemian air.”

Seeing as how Alfred is putting together his own security force, he turns to two of his SAS comrades.

Hainsley Lloyd Bennett plays Deon ‘Bazza’ Bashford, “a posh Bajan playboy” whose expertise is logistics.

Finally, Ryan Fletcher plays Wallace ‘Dave Boy’ MacDougal, “haggard” Highland Scotsman, who “is slowly drinking himself to death after leaving the army.”  Between Alfred, Bazza and Dave Boy, the latter is definitely “the most unpredictable of the trio.”

‘Pennyworth’ premiers on EPIX on July 28th at 9 pm EST.
