‘Cabin In The Woods‘ director (and close collaborator of Joss Whedon’s) Drew Goddard may be taking on the Marvel reboot of the ‘Spider-Man’ franchise. Goddard has worked as a writer on ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’ ‘Angel,’ ‘Alias,’ ‘Lost‘ and the movie ‘Cloverfield.’ Whedon, of course, is the director of one of the most successful movies of all time ‘The Avengers’ and also helmed this summer’s ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ which is one of the most anticipated movies of the summer. So it makes sense that one of his frequent collaborators would step in to take over a flailing Marvel-related franchise.
Following the under-performance of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘ (the lowest grossing Spider-Man movie ever), Sony struck a deal to integrate Spider-Man into the Marvel cinematic universe in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ and to involve Marvel in a reboot of the Spider-Man franchise, which would also be based in the MCU.
Latino Review is reporting that Goddard has a lock on the job, but other sources are saying that he’s just in talks. Goddard had previously been attached to showrun the Netflix series ‘Daredevil’, also a Marvel project, but left to direct Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off ‘Sinister Six’. (The state of which is currently unclear.) So he’s been in the mix, so to speak, for some time.
Also in the mix? Why Iron Man. Robert Downey Jr.’s future involvement with Marvel has been in question for some time now, as his contract has been fulfilled and he’s expressed that he wants to move on. But he has been confirmed to be returning for ‘Civil War’… why not another Marvel project? I wouldn’t bet on an ‘Iron Man 4,’ but RDJ has stated that he might be willing to carry on his role in a lesser capacity, i.e. a smaller, non-headlining part. In the ‘Civil War’ comic, Tony Stark gifted Spider-Man/Peter Parker with an iron suit of armor and convinced him to reveal his secret identity to the public. Will the movies follow that storyline?
