Dark Phoenix

“Every hero has a dark side,” at least according to the new character posters released for ‘Dark Phoenix’.  Actually, only nine of the ten posters bear that slogan.  The tenth reads, “Every dark side has a hero.”  That quote appears on the poster depicting Jessica Chastain, whose character still hasn’t been revealed.  But what could that mean?  We’ll have to wait and see.

‘Dark Phoenix’ caps nearly two decades-worth of storytelling.  The first ‘X-Men’ movie arrived in 2000, and kicked off the flood of superhero movies that followed, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which kicked in in 2008, with ‘Iron Man’.  While the ‘X-Men’ franchise has been up and down, modern comic book flicks owe their existence to these pioneering pics.

The focus of ‘Dark Phoenix’ is Jean Grey, who is portrayed by Sophie Turner, who just made her debut in the role in the dismally-received last film, ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’.  Hopefully, ‘Dark Phoenix’ will redeem that.  The film also stars James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier/Professor X, Michael Fassbender as Erik Lehnsherr / Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence as Raven Darkhölme / Mystique, Alexandra Shipp as Ororo Munroe / Storm, Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy / The Beast, Tye Sheridan as Scott Summers / Cyclops, Kodi Smit-McPhee as Kurt Wagner / Nightcrawler, and Evan Peters as Peter Maximoff / Quicksilver.

Each of them, plus Chastain, get their own dramatic new poster, featuring the fiery “Phoenix Force.”  You can check them out below.  Click to enlarge.  (Courtesy of IGN)

Longtime ‘X-Men’ scribe and producer Simon Kinberg makes his motion picture directing debut with this picture.  He also penned the script.

In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

‘Dark Phoenix’ opens on June 6.
