SPOILER ALERT! This is one giant SPOILER! If you don’t want to know any more about ‘Avengers: Endgame’ then stop reading. In fact, get off the Internet and stay off until next week!
Fans were right! In the first ‘Avengers: Endgame’ trailer, we saw this group of Avengers walking slowly across a grassy field, looking upwards at something in the sky. From left to right, we see Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, still sporting that blonde bob that no one liked in ‘Infinity War’, Chris Evans as Captain America, having sadly shaved off that sexy beard that everybody liked from ‘Infinity War’, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, a wide gap, and then Don Cheadle‘s James Rhodes/War-Machine.
It’s that wide gap between Banner and Rhodey that had folks speculating. Who was missing?

The first best guess would have been Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, played by Brie Larson, as her solo movie hadn’t opened yet when the trailer was released. Her presence among the others might have been a little spoiler-y.
Another potential candidate would be Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd). He appeared elsewhere in the trailer, but was not, at that point, reunited with his teammates. Once again, showing him with them could be a little spoiler-y and would have negated the bit at the end of the trailer when Cap sees him on the gate security camera asking to be let inside.
One thing was for sure, it wasn’t Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), as the trailer revealed that Natasha had to track him down in Japan, where he’d been operating as Ronin.
So who was it?
Pepper Potts! That might spoil this bit of ‘Endgame’, as it only makes sense for her to be present if what they are all staring up at is Tony returning from outer space. That debunks another fan theory that Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow) puts on her own suit of Rescue armor and heads into space to retrieve Tony (Robert Downey Jr.) who is shown stranded at the beginning of the trailer, in bad shape and running out of oxygen.

However, we have seen Paltrow suited up in armor, so she does become Rescue at some point in the film, we just don’t know under what circumstance now.
Luckily we don’t have long to wait until we find out. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ finally touches down in theaters next week on April 26!
