the silence

Now we know what Sabrina and Aunt Zelda did on their winter vacation.  Kiernan Shipka and Miranda Otto, who star on Netflix’s ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ costar in another Netflix project, the batty horror movie ‘The Silence’.  Directed by John R. Leonetti (‘Annabelle’), ‘The Silence’ depicts a world overrun by killer bats, and was based on the novel of the same name by Tim Lebbon.  Joining Shipka and Otto in the cast are Kyle Breitkopf, John Corbett, Billy MacLellan, Kate Trotter, and Stanley Tucci.

Last year, Netflix had a major hit with ‘Bird Box’, a horror movie in which characters had to wear blindfolds to avoid the influence unseen monsters.  And of course, in theaters last year, ‘A Quiet Place’, about survivors in a world where monsters are attracted to sound, was an even bigger hit.  Like in that picture, the killer bats in ‘The Silence’ are drawn to noises.  But it turns out, the bats may not be the biggest threat to the survivors.

When the world is under attack from terrifying creatures who hunt their human prey by sound, 16-year old Ally Andrews (Shipka), who lost her hearing at 13, and her family seeks refuge in a remote haven. But they discover a sinister cult who are eager to exploit Ally’s heightened senses.

The screenplay was written by Carey Van Dyke and Shane Van Dyke.  While it’s true that ‘The Silence’ looks an awful lot like ‘A Quiet Place’, based simply on this trailer, the book it was based on was published in 2015, and Netflix ordered the movie adaptation in 2017, before ‘A Quiet Place’ was released.

Author Lebbon said “There are similarities, of course, but I’m confident that the movie of The Silence will stand on its own.  It’s going to be epic!”

You can judge for yourself when ‘The Silence’ arrives on Netflix on April 12.
