Tony Todd made an indelible impact as the supernatural scary man in the ‘Candyman’ franchise. Academy Award winner Jordan Peele is producing a remake/reboot of the series, with NiaDaCosta (‘Little Woods’) attached to direct. Todd has already gone on the record to support the project, as it is being spearheaded by Peele, the director of the acclaimed thriller ‘Get Out’. But as it turns out, Todd would like to do more than offer his goodwill.
Speaking to Bloody Disgusting, Todd said:
“I want to be a part of the project one way or the other. Of course, I’d want to be a part of it. I helped create this character. I helped bring him to life so I’m sure if Boris Karloff was asked the same thing, he would say exactly what I say. I know the character inside and out.”
Todd has branched out into various types of roles over the years, but he has retained a connection to his horror roots and the 6’5″ actor still exudes the same menace he did when he was slinging a bloody hook, while covered in bees, in the Chicago housing projects. In fact, he discussed the possibility of contributing to the ‘Candyman’ reboot while promoting the DVD/Blu-Ray release of his latest slasher flick, ‘Hell Fest’.
Todd has not spoken to Peele about the possibility of working together, but he seems knowledgeable enough to know that Peele is a very busy man. His directorial follow-up to ‘Get Out’, ‘Us’ will be released in March, so he is busy putting the finishing touches on that and drumming up promotion. He is also crafting CBS All Access’ ‘The Twilight Zone’, which he will also host and narrate, ‘Lovecraft Country’ for HBO, ‘Weird City’ for Youtube Premium, and the Amazon Prime docuseries ‘Lorena’. He also contributed his voice to ‘Toy Story 4’, so presumably, he will be called upon to promote that, as it nears its June 21 release date.
As Todd said:
“No, I haven’t talked to him yet but I know he’s a fan. They’re not going to shoot until deep this year so contracts are weird. You don’t want to get into contracts too soon because then you’re locked in.”
