‘Doctor Who’ fans should savor last night’s New Year’s Day special episode ‘Resolution’ as it will be the only episode for the series in 2019. ‘Doctor Who’ will not be returning in full until 2020.
While fans have been eagerly awaiting confirmation of the premiere date for the next season, it has been kept tightly under wraps. However, while appearing at a special preview screening of ‘Resolution’ the BBC’s Director General, Tony Hall revealed that Season 12 of ‘Doctor Who’ will air on BBC One “very early in 2020”.
Jodie Whittaker previously revealed that she will be returning for Season 12 as the Doctor, saying in an interview:
“I really can’t wait to step back in and get to work again.”
The BBC confirmed that Whittaker would be returning with her new best friends Bradley Walsh (Graham), Tosin Cole (Ryan) and Mandip Gill (Yaz) for more adventures and biscuits in the new and improved TARDIS!
While not much else is known about the upcoming series, showrunner Chris Chibnall gave a statement saying:
“We’re off again! Well, we never actually stopped – as Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor and friends have been winning the hearts of families across the nation this autumn, we’ve been busy with a whole new set of action-packed adventures for the Thirteenth Doctor.”
As far as the New Year’s Day Special goes, both Chibnall and the BBC’s director of content Charlotte Moore are excited for fans around the globe to ring in the new year with Whittaker and the crew. Moore said:
“We’re delighted the Doctor and her companions will be welcoming BBC One audiences into 2019 with this exciting new episode. The Doctor’s fans are in for a special treat on the first day of the new year.”’
