The Boys Karl Urban S

Obviously, the Amazon adaptation of ‘The Boys’ will differ from the comic book in some ways.  Now comes word that another change is being made, and frankly it sounds like a change for the better.  Karl Urban, who leads the new series as Billy Butcher, the leader of the CIA’s scrappy team tasked with keeping the world’s super beings in check will not be enhanced with the substance Compound V.  In the books, The Boys are given this serum in order for them to take on the supers on a more level playing field.

While attending New York Comic Con to promote the series, Urban announced:

“That’s probably one of the differences between the comics and the series.  Eric Kripke — our creator, our showrunner and sort of head writer — really wanted to present a story about humans with non-super abilities taking on the elite 1% of the 1%.

“It’s representative of the little guy taking on The Man. So, at this stage, none of us, none of the The Boys, have superpowers or are enhanced by Compound V.

“Well, except for you…”

That last remark was directed at Karen Fukuhara, who stars on ‘The Boys’ as The Female (short for The Female of the Species, from the famous saying “The female of the species is more deadly than the male”).  Indeed, in the comics, The Female has a habit of slicing people’s faces off with her bare hands.

While it makes sense that The Boys are given a formula to keep them from getting killed when battling super beings, it does sort of negate the idea that they are these everymen representing regular humanity in the face of elite god-like beings.

Standing alongside Urban and Kukuhara will be Jack Quaid as “Wee” Hughie Campbell, Laz Alonso as Mother’s Milk and Tomer Kapon as Frenchie.

Also part of the cast are Jennifer Esposito, as The Boys’ CIA boss Susan Raynor; Elisabeth Shue as Madelyn Stillwell, the Vice President of Hero Management for Vought American, the company responsible for The Seven; Simon Pegg as Hughie’s father; Brittany Allen as the Wolverine-like Popclaw; Chace Crawford as The Deep; Dominique McElligott as Queen Maeve; Nathan Mitchell as Black Noir; Erin Moriarty as Annie January a.k.a. Starlight; Antony Starr as Homelander; and Jessie T. Usher as A-Train.

‘The Boys’ will premier on Amazon sometime in 2019.
