It looks like Warner Bros. is rapidly moving forward with ‘Birds of Prey’. Director Cathy Yan is attached to helm, with a script by Christina Hodson. Now ‘Birds of Prey has a release date, February 7, 2020. Not surprisingly, it will be released in regular format and IMAX. It would appear that WB is strategically opening this movie outside of the normal blockbuster seasons — summer and the holidays. But that doesn’t mean it won’t face competition. Also slated to open in February 2020 are ‘Peter Rabbit 2’, the 25th James Bond flick, an undetermined Blumhouse horror movie, and another comic book adaptation, ‘Bloodshot’, based on the Valiant Entertainment character, with Vin Diesel starring. Of course, release dates can always change, depending on production and when their studios think they stand the best shot in theaters. For the record, it appears that ‘Bloodshot’ has already begun filming, so it has a head start.
This long awaited film will finally bring Margot Robbie back to the screen in the role that made her famous, Harley Quinn. Robbie will also serve as a producer. In this movie, Harley teams with a trio of female heroes, Black Canary, Huntress and police officer Renee Montoya to protect a young girl, Cassandra Cain, from the sadistic crime boss Black Mask. The star of Disney’s ‘Andi Mack’, Peyton Elizabeth Lee was reportedly WB’s top choice to play Cassandra, while they are reportedly looking at Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Jurnee Smollett-Bell to portray Black Canary, Sofia Boutella, Cristin Milioto, Margaret Qualley, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead for Huntress and Justina Machado and Roberta Colindrez for Montoya.
Warner Bros. has scaled back its plans for their DC Universe movies, waiting to see how audiences react to ‘Aquaman’ and ‘Shazam!’. There is also the Todd Phillips-helmed ‘Joker’ movie starring Joaquin Phoenix, which is not attached to the existing DC movies, indicating that WB is exploring alternative ways to bring the DC roster to the big screen.
With a script, director and now a release date locked in, expect full-steam ahead for ‘Birds of Prey’. Are you excited that this team is winging its way onto the big screen?
