Birds Of Prey

Just as word has surfaced that Christina Hodson has been named the writer of Warner Brothers’ ‘Batgirl’ movie, news has arrived that the studio is so impressed with her previously penned ‘Birds of Prey’ script that they are now seeking a director.  Hodson’s script reportedly includes Batgirl and Harley Quinn, but not much more is known beyond that.

The development of ‘Birds of Prey’ has been muddled and reports have been scarce.  When Warner Brothers decided to really buckle down on their DC film properties, they announced a slew of ambitious projects, but with the exception of ‘Wonder Woman,‘ the movies they have released have disappointed both critically and financially.  There have been numerous shake-ups behind the scenes and a lot of the announced movies have apparently been shelved or at least de-emphasized.

While ‘Suicide Squad’ was a mixed bag, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn was a crowd-pleaser and WB quickly offered her an executive producer credit on a solo ‘Harley Quinn’ movie.  Robbie recruited ‘Suicide Squad’s director David Ayer to helm, leaving Gavin O’Connor to take over duties on ‘Suicide Squad 2’.  But it appears that the solo ‘Harley’ movie morphed into ‘Gotham City Sirens’ which would also include Catwoman and Poison Ivy.

Then at some point, it was rumored that ‘Gotham City Sirens’ would pit these female criminals against the Birds of Prey.  Then it was believed that this movie would actually be called ‘Birds of Prey’.

It appears that these will now be two separate movies.  Ayer is reportedly still attached to helm ‘Gotham City Sirens’.

After the success of ‘Wonder Woman’ and Robbie’s breakout performance in ‘Suicide Squad’, maybe Warner Brothers has figured out that fans are hungry for strong females in superhero/villain roles.  If they can get ‘Birds of Prey’ into theaters in a couple of years, it will be the first time an all-female super team has appeared on the big screen.

Are you excited that ‘Birds of Prey’ seems to be back on track?
