With The Whisperers coming to AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead‘ it was only a matter of time until we heard who would be playing the hulking Beta and now have learned that Ryan Hurst (‘Outsiders’,’Bosch’) will be tackling the role. While Hurst has technically done genre work that fits into horror with ‘Bates Motel.’ I’m pretty sure we can all agree that playing the part of Opie on ‘Sons of Anarchy’ is probably the best example of his acting which would fit for this part. Hurst is not the first actor I would have thought to play the role of Beta but now that he has been announced it feels like a perfect fit!

For those unfamiliar with the character, Beta is second-in-command to the leader of The Whisperers who goes by the name of Alpha. He is secretly in love with her which is evident to nearly anyone even if he is in denial about it. Not only is he a musclebound brute, but he is also cunning and a massive thorn in the sides of those who have survived so far with Rick Grimes.

Hurst will be joining Samantha Morton who is playing Alpha and Cassady McClincy was is playing Alpha’s daughter, Lydia. We know that there will already be a considerable change in the dynamic here as much of Lydia’s character evolution has developed from falling in love with Carl Grimes who, as we all know, is no longer alive in the television series. While I’m sure, a similar arc of why she will want to stay with Grimes’ group will emerge it seems as if it could be a bit harder to work into the story arc.

Are you excited to see Ryan Hurt join ‘The Walking Dead’ as Beta? Do you think that he’ll be fun to watch square off against the survivors when ‘The Walking Dead’ returns? Share your thoughts below!
