walking dead

When AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead‘ returns for a ninth season we won’t be seeing Daryl Dixon just sporting his iconic crossbow as he’ll have some new toys to play with. While we’re used to Norman Reedus primarily using one weapon for stealth and accuracy, showrunner Angela Kang has shared that they’ll be mixing things up a bit in the upcoming season. The idea behind this is that bullets are starting to become even more of a premium and that our survivors are going to be looking for alternative ways to dispatch the Walkers that they come up against.

According to King:

“Since our characters are being more stingy with their bullets this year, we wanted to make sure Daryl had a good secondary weapon for hand-to-hand fighting (a crossbow is difficult to reload, so it’s not good for quick combat). Norman helped to custom design a pair of knives that he can use for two-handed combat. They’re saw-backed Bowie knives with finger rings that allow you to quickly twirl the knives into different positions (you can grip them in either direction).”

While we always have loved Daryl using his crossbow, let’s be honest at how impractical it is for a moment. It isn’t the best weapon to use in close up encounters with the reload time not being that quick. I’m going to guess that Eugene is having production issues with his ammunition shop if being low on bullets will be an issue, but we’ll see how that plays out later this year.

Are you looking forward to seeing Daryl Dixon using a different set of weapons on ‘The Walking Dead’? With so many major characters departing in the ninth season, will Norman Reedus become the central actor on the series? Do you think we’ll see Daryl having to use these weapons against the living as well? Share your thoughts below!
