Executive producer, creator, and showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has shared some set photos and videos from Netflix’s upcoming ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ series, but now here are the first official photos with the actors, including ‘Mad Men’s Kiernan Shipka, Lucy Davis (‘Wonder Woman’), Miranda Otto (‘Lord of the Rings’) and Richard Coyle (‘Born To Kill’) in character.
Perhaps drawing inspiration from ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, Shipka’s Sabrina Spellman is seen wandering through the woods in a crimson cloak with a matching bag. She is also holding a walking stick and a bell, which is apparently needed for her “Dark Baptism,” shown in the second photo.
At this “Dark Baptism,” Sabrina sheds her outer garments and is shown just wearing a virginal white nightgown. This ceremony is overseen by Coyle’s Father Blackwood, who is described as “High Priest of the Church of Night and Dean of the Academy of the Unseen Arts” with Davis and Otto who play Sabrina’s aunts Hilda and Zelda, respectively, looking on. In the background can be seen the Weird Sisters, named after the three old crones in Shakespeare’s ‘MacBeth, Prudence (Tati Gabrielle), Dorcas (Abilgail F. Cowen) and Agatha (Adeline Rudolph). These will be three witchy “mean girls” who torment Sabrina as she attempts to come to terms with her mystical nature and use her powers to defend her friends and family from dark forces.
There are some additional figures present in the background, but they are likely just extras.
The cast also includes former Disney star Ross Lynch as Sabrina’s human boyfriend Harvey Kinkle, who it turns out hails from a long line of witch hunters, as well as Michelle Gomez, Gavin Leatherwood, Chance Perdomo, Bronson Pinchot, Jaz Sinclair, and Lachlan Watson.
This dark take on the classic Archie Comics characters has been compared to ‘The Exorcist’ and ‘Rosemary’s Baby’. The first season, which is comprised of 10 episodes will be available to stream on Netflix on October 26, 2018, in time for Halloween. Netflix ordered two seasons right off the bat, so expect 10 more episodes around the same time next year.
How are things shaping up so far? Are you ready for this “chilling adventure?”
