Netflix’s ‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ has enchanted another cast member as Miranda Otto has joined on to play Sabrina’s aunt Zelda.  While Aunt Hilda, who will be played by ‘Wonder Wonder”s Lucy Davis, is described as being much warmer and more maternal, Zelda is listed as colder… but with a possible warmer secret side.  Here is her casting description:

[ZELDA SPELLMAN]Female, late 30s to early 40s, All Ethnicities. Zelda is the harsher of the Spellman sisters who helped raise Sabrina, though her sternness and tough facade might be hiding a more…mothering soul. Unlike Hilda, Zelda claims that she has never known love—her devotion to the Dark Lord is all-consuming—which is why people looking for a love-potion go to Hilda; those looking to make a spite-jar go to Zelda…

“Proud and devout, Zelda believes there is no greater honor than serving the Dark Lord as a member of the Church of Night. She is the family’s disciplinarian, fiercely protective of Sabrina and very much Cain to Hilda’s Abel.”

Beth Broderick portrayed Zelda Spellman in the classic sitcom version, which ran from 1997 until 2003.

Otto may be best known for playing Eowyn in ‘Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers’ and ‘Return of the King’.  She has also appeared in ‘Annabelle: Creation’, ‘I, Frankenstein’ and ‘War of the Worlds’ and TV series like ’24: Legacy’, ‘Homeland’ and ‘Rake’.

In the dark, new version, Kiernan Shipka will portray the title Teenage Witch, who is struggling with the emergence of her dark powers.  The cast also includes Michelle Gomez as Sabrina’s favorite teacher, Mary Wardell who is secretly possessed by the forces of darkness.  Jaz Sinclair portrays Sabrina’s best friend Rosalind Walker and Chance Perdomo will play Sabrina’s necromancer cousin Ambrose Spellman.  It was just announced that Richard Coyle has been cast as Father Blackwood, the High Priest of the Church of Night and Dean of the Academy of the Unseen Arts who appears to be the series Big Bad.

With this casting, most of the main cast is in place.  There’s still the matter of Sabrina’s boyfriend Harvey and possibly a few more teen peers.  And of course, someone has to voice Salem.

Netflix ordered two 10-episode seasons of ‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’.  No release date has been announced.
