Jason Todd

The ‘Titans’ live-action series, which will be made available exclusively on Warner Brothers’ upcoming DC Comics-based streaming service, is currently filming.  News about this show has been slow to trickle out.  Beyond casting, not much has been revealed and fans have been forced to make inferences based on the smallest of nuggets.  It appears now that the titled for the first seven episodes has been revealed and if they are accurate, there is at least one major shocker.

  • #1.1 “Titans” (Pilot)
  • #1.2 “Hawk and Dove”
  • #1.3 “Starfire”
  • #1.4 “Rachel”
  • #1.5 “The Doom Patrol”
  • #1.6 “The Messenger”
  • #1.7 “Jason Todd”
Yep, episode seven is entitled ‘Jason Todd’, a.k.a. the second Robin, now known as Red Hood.  Last year, a casting description was released for a character named “Daniel Cross” (all of the casting descriptions for this series have used pseudonyms):
  • “[DANIEL CROSS] Male, 17-19, Caucasian. Athletic, street smart, cocky, yet charming. His life is changed forever when he crosses a crime fighter and is given a new outlet for his rebellious ways. RECURRING GUEST STAR.

Many speculated that this was for Roy Harper/Speedy/Arsenal, but *I* figured that this was actually a call for Jason Todd.  My guess was based on the second sentence, “His life is changed forever when he crosses a crime fighter and is given a new outlet for his rebellious ways.”

In the comics, Jason Todd was a petty street crook, who was ballsy enough to try and steal the Batmobile’s hubcaps.  Batman was actually impressed with his audaciousness and since Dick Grayson had left and ditched the Robin identity, he made Jason the new Robin.  But Jason’s brashness didn’t fade and it wound up getting him killed.  He was later revived though.  The current explanation is that he was resurrected using one of Ra’s al-Ghul’s Lazarus Pits.  Though he started off as a villain, he has since become an anti-hero, known as the Red Hood, but he remains the black sheep of the Bat Family.

As for the rest of the episodes, #4 is entitled “Rachel” which is Raven’s civilian name.  Episode #3 is named ‘Starfire’, and #5 is ‘The Doom Patrol’, which is Beast Boy’s adopted family.  That makes it sound like these episodes will focus on these characters.  But presumably, they will all gather in the first episode, otherwise it would just be a Dick Grayson-episode.  So, my guess is that they will gather and these three episodes will be flashbacks.  The one episode that is a mystery is ‘The Messenger’.

This character was teased at the same time as ‘Daniel Cross’:

  • [THE MESSENGER] Male, 50s-60s, Open ethnicity. Outwardly a warm and kind presence, he doesn’t seem the type to be powerful or malicious. But he has the ability to turn on a dime and be the most terrifying man you have ever met. Seeking offer only names/recognizable faces…RECURRING GUEST STAR.”

My guess at that time was Brother Blood, but honestly, I don’t know.

What do you think of Jason Todd being part of ‘Titans’?  What type of role would you like him to play?
