When Muggles across the globe learned that Jude Law (‘Enemy at the Gates’,’Gattaca’) would be playing a younger Albus Dumbledore in ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,‘ there was quite a bit of confusion. Sure, he was great in ‘Sherlock Holmes’ and his work on ‘The Young Pope’ has been garnishing grave reviews, but how exactly would he fit as Dumbledore? Yes, he’s had experience with genre films such as ‘Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow’ and ‘A.I. Artificial Intelligence’ but honestly, it is probably more his role in films such as ‘Alfie’ which helped him for the part.

Producer David Heyman really sums it up best of what to expect from Law’s take on the wizard who will later have such an impact on Harry Potter’s life:

“One of the reasons we chose Jude is he has many of the qualities we find in Dumbeldore in the Potter films. He’s got authority, he’s got a twinkle in his eye, he’s sometimes a bit elliptical. So you have that but also have this youthful energy and jubilance. So he brings that twinkle, mischief, authority, and power, but at the same time brings far more youthful energy to the film. You understand why he would be your favorite teacher and be someone you believe is an extraordinary wizard.”

While Law’s natural appearance might have held some back, I think after we seen him transform as Grindelwald in the film we can mostly agree he’ll have the look and character down.

Do you feel that Jude Law will be a perfect Dumbledore for ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’? How do you think he’ll play off of Johnny Depp’s performance of Gellert Grindelwald in the film? Share your thoughts below!
