the punisher

Provided you’ve already finished binging on Netflix’s ‘The Defenders’— and if not, don’t worry, this is spoiler free– did you sit through the end credits of the final episode?  Because Netflix slipped in a little bonus.  It’s not exactly the same as the Marvel movies’ mid- and post-credits scenes.  Instead, Netflix offered a teaser trailer for its next series, ‘The Punisher’ starring Jon Bernthal.  This marks the first Netflix/Marvel show that was not part of the originally announced batch.  The vigilante, real name Frank Castle, was introduced in ‘Daredevil’ Season Two with an eye on spinning him off into his own series if he proved popular enough.  Guess he did!

If you didn’t sit through the credits… or if you’re Netflix cut off the credits to show you a trailer for a terrible stand-up comedy special… fear not!

Check out the trailer below:

There are heavy references to Castle’s military background.  There had previously been references to that in ‘Daredevil’, hinting that there was more there than that show was going to explore.  Even if you don’t know The Punisher’s comic book origin, it is spelled out pretty clearly, though it will surely be more graphic on the actual show.  There’s even a glimpse of who might be the villain Jigsaw.

The trailer does not announce when ‘The Punisher’ will launch, but director Dearbhla Walsh had previously stated she believed it would arrive in November which sounds plausible.

We should also be on the look out for ‘Daredevil’ S3 and ‘Jessica Jones’, ‘Luke Cage’ and ‘Iron Fist’ S2, although maybe not all four in one year.  Will there be a ‘Defenders’ Season Two?  That remains to be seen.  Netflix doesn’t release their streaming numbers.  It may depend on the chatter that the first season generates in the coming weeks.  Then again, ‘Iron Fist’ got pretty lousy reactions from fans and critics and it got renewed, so… Then again, ‘The Defenders’ may have been a one-off special arrangement.  It couldn’t have been easy juggling all those cast members! We’ll have to wait and see, and unfortunately, it may be months before we hear anything in that regard.

Meanwhile, look forward to ‘The Punisher’ before year’s end.

Are you excited about this series?  Do you think it will connect to the other shows or go off in its own direction?
