punisher

We’ve just learned that 3 new cast members have joined Netflix for ‘The Punisher: Crime‘.  Knowing that Jon Bernthal couldn’t attend this year’s New York Comic-Con due to his filming commitments to Marvel, it’s good to see that we’re hearing some of these details come in prior to the convention. The three additional cast members announced are Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Amber Rose Revah, and the previously announced Ben Barnes.

Previously we had been informed that Barnes was set to play the villain Bobby Saint in the series though we’ve since learned that he is set to play Billy Russo. Russo was one of Frank’s closest friends when they were in the Special Forces and runs a private military corporation called Anvil. Fans familiar with the comics will recognize the name of Billy Russo as the real name of the crimelord Jigsaw so we’ll be seeing some major changes from his origins but potentially fitting to tie in with the crime spree that the Kingpin has started and the gunrunning that we’ve seen in Luke Cage.

The newly announced cast members have some interesting parts as well. The stand out of which will, of course, be Ebon Moss-Bachrach (‘The Last Ship’,’Girls’) who is set to play Micro. In this story arc, he is a former NSA analyst that shared secrets with Castle while anyone who knew Microchip from the comics knows him as The Punisher’s right-hand man when it comes to anything from weapons to information.

Also joining the cast is Amber Rose Revah (‘Indian Summers’,’From Paris with Love’) who is set to take on the part of Dinah Madani. She is a Homeland Security agent who crosses paths with The Punisher though at this time we don’t know if she is out to stop him or is silently supporting his efforts in the war on terror.

According to showrunner and Executive Producer Steve Lightfoot:

“I’m really excited about the cast we’re assembling alongside Bernthal as Frank Castle. I look forward to watching Ben, Ebon and Amber embody these characters and breathe vivid life into the story we are crafting for this season of ‘Marvel’s The Punisher.”

Jeph Loeb added that:

“We couldn’t be more thrilled about the remarkable talent joining Jon Bernthal in ‘Marvel’s The Punisher.’ Ebon, Ben and Amber are incredibly talented actors and we can’t wait to see them bring these characters to life.”

One of the more interesting aspects of ‘The Punisher’ in the comics is how much of law enforcement has secretly aided him over the years or turned a blind eye to what he was doing in taking matters into his own hands, the police who follow the rules and feel he should be brought to justice, and those who are corrupt and working for crime bosses like The Kingpin. In a city as violent as Marvel’s New York has proven to be so far it will be curious as to how this plays out on screen as we’ve already seen that Fisk still owns much of the police force even after how things played out in ‘Daredevil’.
