Avatar

There is a lot riding on the sequels to ‘Avatar’ and producer Jon Landau of Lightstorm Entertainment has shared a bit on where they are in production and what the focus of the films will be. Fans of the first film probably expected more of Jake Sully and the Na’vi he has joined will all be thrilled that he is likely returning. Not only that, but they won’t just focus on Jake but his entire family.

Landau was speaking at CineEurope where he mentioned the following:

“At the center of each of our four movies will be the Sully family. Each sequel will play as a stand-alone movie. Each movie’s story will come to its own conclusion… However, when looked at as a whole, the journey across all four movies will create an even larger connected epic saga for audiences around the world.”

This isn’t to say that Jake will be the star of all of the films but will most likely show up or be mentioned when going forward. I would suspect that at least the second film will have him starring though if this is a focus on all of the family, it wouldn’t surprise me if they veer away from his story as the saga progresses.

The story could focus on Jake’s human family which he left behind though I suspect the primary focus will be on his new life as the Na’vi.

While Landau didn’t give us specifics of any of the upcoming films he did talk about the world itself by saying that:

“We always knew that Pandora was a place as diverse as Earth. At the heart of any movie are the characters. One of the strengths of great scripts are always the universal and relatable themes… There’s no more relatable theme than family.”

This echoes what Sam Worthington had said about the films earlier this year.

As they’ve been working on the scripts for these films for years, it is quite likely that the stories will have a more robust and creative plot than ‘Avatar’ did if it will want to be able to surpass that $2.7B worldwide box office draw of the first film. All of the cutting-edge 3D technology in the world won’t keep the series bringing in those numbers if we don’t have a reason to want to see more.

Are you looking forward to ‘Avatar 2’? Do you think that the family theme will work in connecting and expanding the world of Pandora? Share your thoughts below!

We will journey to Pandora once again in ‘Avatar 2’ when it hits theaters on December 18th, 2020.
