Thanks to international sales we know that ‘Warcraft 2‘ might be happening and now Duncan Jones (‘Moon’,’Source Code’) is sharing his vision for the sequel. While his work on ‘Warcraft‘ didn’t do well domestically, there was a lot of setup and potential in the plot for the sequel. It now looks as if some of that groundwork might be paying off.

The $386 million it took in at the box office overseas was well over the $47.3 domestic draw but that doesn’t guarantee a follow up will be made. Sure, it worked for ‘Pacific Rim’ but Universal hasn’t committed yet one way or another and with lackluster returns on ‘The Mummy’ it might be hard for the studio to continue investing in this potential franchise.

Jones shared the details after a screening at Prince Charles Cinema in London’s Leicester Square as to what he feels the direction of the future of the franchise would be if it ends up happening:

“This first film is about establishing the world, and showing Durotan helping his son escape a dying planet. So to me the idea over the course of three films would be for Thrall to fulfill that vision of Durotan to create a new homeland for the Orcs. So in [the sequel] it would be the adolescent years of that baby, and anyone who does know their Warcraft stories would know it’s very much a Spartacus story that goes on with that character. I would basically follow that through. And with the human side of it, which is a little less clear of how that would follow, but basically there is an aftermath to this film which would need to be completed. And on the Orc side you’re very much following that baby, Go’el, known as Thrall in the universe, and how he eventually creates the Orc homeland.”

There is plenty of opportunities to grow the world from here and all of the basic ideas have already been introduced. With a slightly tighter script, they might still be able to win over audiences into building a fantasy franchise which the world is sorely lacking at the moment.

Only time will tell if Universal continues the franchise but there is potential there and at least an overseas audience.
