When ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ left off we found Luke Skywalker alone on a planet with no real knowledge of why he abandoned the galaxy after his Jedi school was attacked. Now, Rian Johnson explains a bit about how he crafted this story for ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi.’ It sounds like some of the blanks are going to be filled in and while it will make sense, it is hard to tell if we’ll get all of the answers here.

It seems unlikely and almost cowardly that Luke would disappear after Kylo Ren and his knights attacked with the rise of Snoke but with the ominous “it’s time for the Jedi to end” line from the trailer all we have is more questions than answers.

When talking about building the movie in his mind, Johnson states:

“Figuring out where his head was at was the very first thing I had to do when writing the movie. I had to crack this. And it had to be something for me that first and foremost made sense. Why did Luke Skywalker go off to this island? That was the starting point, and that’s what the entire movie explores.”

This could lead to some interesting flashback sequences if nothing else that would be an excuse to bring back Han Solo for one last round but it could just as easily come in dialogue with Rey. I suspect the answer to this mystery won’t be given to us in the first five minutes of the movie though.Hopefully, there will at least be a quick answer as to why he is on the first Jedi Temple of Ach-To where we find him living.

As to the reason that Skywalker didn’t stay behind and fight Ren and the rise of the First Order? Another mystery for now as Johnson teases:

“I didn’t want it to. There has to be a good reason that makes sense to him — and to some degree makes sense to us.”

You can’t tell from that if we’ll even be given a straight answer in the upcoming film.

Are you happy to hear that we’ll be getting some resolution as to why Luke Skywalker has apparently turned his back on the Jedi Order and the Galaxy? Do you think it will be a clear cut answer or does this hint that we’ll only get a partial reason in the upcoming film? Share your thoughts below!
