According to Karen Gillan, in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2‘, we’re going to see quite a different side of her character Nebula. Previews from the upcoming blockbuster have shown her as both opposed to and working alongside the Guardians and while what Gillan shares about her character doesn’t give anything major away in the realm of spoilers – it does support that she switches sides. I’m quite curious as to how exactly James Gunn will be showing her in enough of a sympathetic light for audiences to accept her fighting with our heroes instead of against them but we have a couple of clues here about it.
Just like in the first movie, it seems that Nebula will be in direct contact with the primary villain this time around. However, it isn’t quite a good relationship as she had with either Thanos or Ronan as Nebula is a prisoner here and she wants to escape:
“Well, that’s her main objective throughout the entire film. She obviously takes many paths to sort of get there in any way she can, but she is being held captive. So she’s there against her will, which is just a funny dynamic, because she’s like, ‘Oh for goodness sake.”
Now being imprisoned and not being able to get away aren’t the same thing here. Part of the reason we find her where we do is that she has a reason to stick around:
“She doesn’t really want to be there, but she does because she needs to sort out these things with her sister.”
This need to meet up with Gamora will be essential to her story arc in the film though we aren’t too clear yet if their reunion will end up as a happy one:
“What I love about the second movie for Nebula, in particular, is that we get — We know that she’s a pretty angry woman with some daddy issues. [But] in the second movie, we’re going to start to see how much pain her father actually caused her, and we’re going to delve right into the relationship with her sister Gamora.”
As we’ve seen a few promos with Nebula working with the team and it has been announced that she will be in ‘Avengers: Infinity War‘ it is clear that the team won’t just kill her on first sight, however I don’t suspect the reunion will start off in a way that builds any kind of attempt at trust.
