James Wan is gearing up to direct DC’s ‘Aquaman’ solo film, due out in theaters in 2019, if DC’s current plan continues as scheduled.  Wan, best known to fans as a horror-movie director behind such recent hits as ‘Saw,’ ‘Insidious,’ and ‘The Conjuring,’ has been gearing up for his superhero action and fielding a lot of very intriguing questions, since he has the standalone film of arguably the most unique character in the entire Justice League.

Of particular fan interest is how underwater scenes are going to happen on-screen.  Since Aquaman is from the ocean (“aqua” is right there in his name and all), it stands to reason that lots of the movie will indeed be taking place “under the sea.”  In a recent interview with IGN, the director was poetic on the subject, including reacting to the interviewer’s suggestion that he simply use speech bubbles on-screen:

“Yeah, speech bubbles, right?! Maybe it’ll be speech bubbles.  [Laughs]  I never thought about that… words coming out of the bubbles.  It’s brilliant!  That’s a cool visual.

“It would be very literal, yeah!  No, here’s the thing I always say: if you have water in your lungs, like these characters do, there’s no air bubble.  So I don’t know…  I just think in my movie, I want to kind of create…  I love the idea of underwater speaking, but with a real sort of sonic, aquatic quality to it.  So there’s this sort of aquatic, almost sonar/whale thing.  Even though it’s in a human language, there’s this slight sort of underlay to it, this ping to it, which I think would be interesting for us to design, from a sound design perspective.  Yeah, it will be fun.  Also, Zack has some ideas that he’ll be doing in ‘Justice League.’

“Listen, I’ll be honest: in some ways, JL will be an experiment for me, to see what works and what may not work as well.  And then kind of go, okay… here’s the great thing, with all these superhero movies, you watch from one movie to another, and they always sort of slightly change things along the way.  You kind of have to do that to make what’s best for your film.”

Wan also recently got fans into a bit of a tizzy when he mentioned that he wanted Aquaman to be the “Wolverine” of the Justice League.  While many people took that to mean that he wants Jason Momoa’s character to assume leadership of the group and be the focal point of many of the DC films – or at least a small part of all of them – the director tried to clarify things on Twitter a bit, saying “I referenced Wolverine for the loner/outsider aspect. That is all. Don’t freak out over headlines.”

Tony Schaab mixed up all this fake puke at home and then he went to this movie theater, hid the puke in his jacket, climbed up to the balcony, and then he made a noise like this: hua-hua-hua-huaaaaaaa… and then he dumped it over the side, all over the people in the audience. And then – this was horrible – all the people started getting sick and throwing up all over each other… and he never felt so bad in his entire life!  A lover of most things sci-fi and horror, Tony is an author by day and a DJ by night.
