It seems that the Universal Monsters reboot isn’t the only horror themed shared universe model out there as Blumhouse Productions plans to give them a run for their money. The Marvel shared universe concept has been so successful that everyone wants to get in on it! The groundwork is being laid here to at the very least join the worlds of ‘Insidious’ and ‘Sinister‘ in the near future. In fact, Executive Producer and Blumhouse founder Jason Blum has said that this year’s releases will mark the beginning of that plan.

When asked about the shared universe concept he says that:

“Be like Marvel, you mean? Yeah! I want to do that. We’ve been putting Easter Eggs in movies in different things. There’s some in Insidious 3. There’s some in Sinister 2. So yeah, we’ve been doing that. I would like to do more of that.’

With ‘Sinister 2‘ due out on August 21st and ‘Insidious: Chapter 3‘ to be released on June 5th, it’ll be interesting to see what Easter Eggs will be tying the two films together. Of course it won’t just be the two films that are tied together:

“We’re not close to an Avengers, but I do like the idea of having the worlds collide in the different franchises we work on. That’s a really cool idea… I want to continue to do that.”

While Blumhouse is behind quite a few horror films it should be pointed out that Focus Features handles ‘Insidious: Chapter 3’ and ‘Sinister 2,’ the ‘Paranormal Activity’ franchise is done by Paramount Pictures, and ‘The Purge’ series is done by Universal. So while they have their fingers in quite a few horror filled pies it’ll be hard to bring them all together. I’m curious on what other existing properties they may want to roll into this universe or which future ones they have in mind that would be a good fit here.

What are your thoughts on a shared horror universe from Blumhouse Productions? Do you think we’ll be seeing the big bads from the films working together or against one another as the films go forward? Share your thoughts below!
